NINE LEGENDS ONE love ::: THREE generations of trumpet players
In an orchestra, the trumpet, at least until the beginning of the 20th century, is mainly being used to play some kind of fanfare, announcing glory, war or victory. It is safe to say that only in jazz this instrument has shown its full sonic and emotional potential. The muted trumpet of Miles Davis has nothing to do with triumph. But of course, jazz trumpet players can just as well use the techniques and styles of classically trained musicians. In a decent jazz orchestra, first trumpet and drummer always take the lead.

“The second jazz concert I attended when I was a kid has been a quintet led by the legendary Woody Shaw. This experience made a very deep impression on me. And so, trumpet sounds played a big part in my jazz education from the very beginning. I chose the guitar as my main instrument. When I got into straight ahead jazz, I always wanted to take the part of the tenor sax (same range and notation as the guitar) within a jazz quintet. Naturally, my first jazz album was a quintet with trumpet, guitar and a piano trio.
“Trumpet Tales” is a portrait of 9 legendary jazz trumpet player since the 1920ties that are close to my heart: Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Clifford Brown, Kenny Wheeler, Don Cherry, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw.
The compositions of my TRUMPET TALES are performed by some of today’s finest jazz trumpet players and the Barbara Bruckmüller Big Band.
Three of the compositions were written for the collaboration with the Barbara Bruckmüller Big Band. Barbara arranged two tunes for her band, sax player Tobias Hoffmann did three arrangements, four tunes were arranged by myself. I am very happy with the result and want to thank the musicians and engineers involved, making this dream project of mine possible.”

01 SLOW MOTION POPS Dedicated to Louis Armstrong after I watched slow motion videos of him. The arrangement changes into normal swing tempo and later into fast double time. featuring New York-born trumpet player Marc Osterer who weaves jazz, classical, and contemporary influences into a vibrant sound. His music reflects both tradition and innovation, carrying the spirit of his roots onto stages worldwide.
02 WALTZING WHEELER A lyrical waltz for Canadian trumpet player Kenny Wheeler, the ultimate lyricist among the modern jazz trumpet players. featuring Martin Ohrwalder, born in 1972 in Innsbruck, Tyrol. As a soloist, he plays in the Jazz Big Band Graz, the Michael Mantler Jazz Composers Orchestra, the Nouvelle Cuisine Big Band and the Hot Pants Road Club. He is founder of the Jazz Orchestra Tirol.
03 CHET Chet Baker might have been the most melodic among all trumpet players. I wrote lyrics to this tune sung by Serbian singer Marija Miletić. featuring Lorenz Widauer, born in Salzburg/Austria. Beginning his musical journey with classical piano, he very soon transitioned to trumpet, studying both classical and jazz, seamlessly blending these influences into his musical identity. Featuring Marija Miletić, born in 1996 in Serbia. She began her musical journey at the age of nine, studying classical piano. She earned a full scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA and then continued her education graduating in jazz vocals at the Music and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna.
04 FREDDIE Freddie Hubbard was possibly the greatest „allrounder” in modern jazz. And he is my favorite trumpet player. featuring Lorenz Widauer
05 SO, DIZZY? This tune refers to the story when young Dizzy Gillespie attacked his then employer Cab Calloway with a knife. The rock beat in 5/4 is a nice mood change for the program. The main theme is still quite „Dizzy-esque”. featuring Marc Osterer
06 CHERRY BLUESOME Don Cherry was heavily into African and Indian traditional music. This musical portrait of him delves into these influences. One more time we use a meter in five. featuring Daniel Nösig, born November 25, 1975 in Tyrol, is an Austrian jazz trumpeter, composer and arranger. He received classical trumpet lessons and then switched to jazz. Nösig studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Jarmo Hoogendijk, Eric Vloeimans and Ack van Rooyen. At the Dutch Jazz Competition in 2000 he won the Soloist Prize.
07 CLIFFHANGER The amazing Clifford Brown died way to soon. He gets this musical dedication by the usage of musical motives of his most famous composition „Joy Spring”. featuring Manfred Holzhacker Born in Vienna, he studied trumpet, jazz arrangement and composition. He played with Richard Österreicher Big Band, Vienna Jazz Orchestra, Vienna Big Band Machine and collaborated with The Temptations, Eumir Deodato, Defunkt Big Band, Joseph Bowie, Marianne Mendt, Christian Kolonovits and many others.
08 WOODY Woody Shaw was the first jazz great I had the chance to see live as a kid. His life was full of tragedy and chaos. He died quite young, his influence on modern jazz trumpeters cannot be overstated. featuring Manfred Holzhacker
09 MILES Miles Davis was, is and always will be my musical hero. featuring Martin Ohrwalder
10 CHET This is the initial instrumental version of the song for Chet Baker. featuring Lorenz Widauer

Klaus Wienerroither is an Austrian musician, composer, radio producer and host. He studied Psychology (degree with distinction) and afterwards guitar at the Music University of Vienna (diploma with distinction), Wienerroither has developed a distinctive voice across Jazz, Pop/Rock, and electronic music. He recorded and performed with diverse projects: His band “Go Blow” with some of the finest Austrian Jazz musicians, the genre-spanning duo “BoABoA” with singer Agnes Heginger, a Soul project with Viennese lyrics together with legendary singer Hansi Lang (“Die Bucht von Wien”) or the Rock ’n’ roll band “Tunesmith” where he also sang lead. His releases include collaborations with American Hip-Hop artists (Tunesmith & Villa Life in 2016) and lately producing electronic beats in the Disco and House genre for various record labels.
Since 2004 he is producing programs and features for Austria’s cultural radio station Ö1. Klaus is the composer of and creative mind behind TRUMPET TALES.
Barbara Bruckmüller, a composer and jazz pianist born in Vienna, was influenced by the sounds of „Hollywood Jazz“ from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s at a young age. She successfully completed her jazz piano studies with Paul Urbanek at the Gustav Mahler Conservatory in Vienna in 2004. Barbara’s inspiration and role models lie not so much in individual pianists, but rather in great Big Band leaders and composers such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Oliver Nelson, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Gil Evans, Joe Henderson, and Maria Schneider. In 2009, she founded Barbara Bruckmüller Big Band. Over the years, she has had the honor of writing arrangements and compositions for artists such as Christian McBride, Peter Herbert („Bass Instinct“), and The Su’Sis.
In August 2023, she and her orchestra were invited to record „Trumpet Tales“ by guitarist and composer Klaus Wienerroither at the ORF RadioKulturhaus in Vienna. https://barbarabruckmueller.com/
